GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — A sanitary sewer overflow occurred in Greenfield on Sunday afternoon. The discharge of untreated sewage and waste was into the Green River near Meridian Street and was caused by a backed-up sewer main. While it does not impact drinking water, the public should avoid contact with Green River and Deerfield River in Greenfield, as well as the Connecticut River in Deerfield, Montague, and Sunderland for 48 hours.

A sanitary sewer overflow has occurred in Greenfield. The discharge was into the Green River near Meridian Street.
A start time is estimated as 3 PM on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The overflow concluded at 4:30 PM, Sunday, May 17, 2026.
The overflow was caused by a backed-up sewer main. The discharge consists of untreated sewage and waste. The amount discharged is estimated to be under 100 gallons.
The City Greenfield has reported the overflow.
The sanitary sewer overflow is impacting the Green River and Deerfield River in Greenfield, as well as the Connecticut River in Deerfield, Montague, and Sunderland. The overflow does not impact drinking water.
Avoid contact with these water bodies for 48 hours due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.
